For the record, on the Union Leader it looks like Obama has purchased a 728x90 and a 300x600 in tandem. With the Register, it looks like it’s bumpers (or sometimes called gutters, there are a thousand different names) and a 728x90 in tandem.
It’s a high impact maneuver. You take over content where you know your competition will have either other ads or press. Automotive advertisers do this on a daily basis (it’s called conquesting).
I understand SFB’s issue with it - and yes new sources should probably be held to a higher standard, but it’s not as if the Obama campaign is doing something unprecedented. They knew the Republicans were going to be getting a ton of free press and wanted to make sure that the Democratic message was not lost.

I just think this concern is totally off base. Anyone is free to buy a takeover of a site, and anything that creates demand for digital ad inventory is supporting journalism. Political candidates don’t have less right to do that than Cheetos.
